It's the stupidification of folklore... much like a money spider is only a bringer of wealth when it crosses your palm on its own, a black cat is a sign of bad luck only when it crosses your path, but people just mentally edit it down to an animal being lucky not a particular circumstance being an omen.

When I walked into the vet she said “so what’s his name…what did you name him?” I said that I had never had a cat before but I think this is a girl. She told me snuggly that they are always boys. Then found out the same way I did. Mine is named “Shyloh” and she is not friendly and is petite and talkative and very lovable with me and dogs.
